The musical came to be thanks to Stephen Schwartz. The acclaimed lyricist and composer read the Maguire book, a different take on the world L. Frank Baum created at the turn of the 20th century, while resting on holiday in 1995. He immediately sought out the author to adapt the book into a musical. Schwartz eventually met the author in 1998 and walked away with the rights to adapt the novel Wicked into a big Broadway musical.

Welcome to WickedTickets.com Your Number One Source For Broadway Shows

There was a time in the Land of Oz before the mere mention of the Wicked Witch of the West struck fear in the hearts and souls of munchkins, before a farm house from Kansas fell from the sky and deposited itself on the Wicked Witch’s sister, and before a motley crew of a girl, a lion, a scarecrow, and a tin man conspired to take out the witch. This is the time of Elphaba and her journey of self discovery. Wicked the Musical takes audiences at Broadway, at theaters throughout the country, and at theatres across the world to this time and place and we have the Wicked tickets to see the production nearest you.

Wicked the Musical: Production History:

Wicked the Musical began as an inkling of an idea while Stephen Schwartz was on vacation in 1995. He read Gregory Maguire’s revisionist novel The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and decided Wicked was meant to be a musical showcased on Broadway. Schwartz recruited Emmy Award-winning writer Winnie Holzman to transform the dark book into a viable big Broadway story, appropriately light while keeping the elements that made the book such an inspiration for Schwartz.

The musical went into the workshop stage with several of the actresses and actors who read eventually finding themselves playing the roles before a live audience. Wicked the Musical previewed out of town in San Francisco at the Curran Theatre in the summer of 2003. The original stage version would be reworked for its Broadway debut at the Gershwin Theatre, with previews beginning October 8, 2003 and an official opening October 30, 2003.

Wicked the Musical is still in production at the Gershwin, but it has spurred several other notable productions. First on this list is the surprise four-year run in Chicago at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts Oriental Theatre. That run followed a resounding stop on the first national tour. The next notable production came to the West End at the Apollo Victoria Theatre on September 7, 2006. There are now two national tours concurrently traversing the North America and countless international productions.
