Majestic Theatre - San Antonio Tickets
The theatre is the oldest and was, at one time, the largest in the state of Texas. Originally the Majestic Theatre opened as a movie house that also hosted live performances by musicians and other stage professionals. It opened on June 14, 1929 and symbolized a desire by the city to become much more than just another big town to conduct business. This theatre, quite simply, began the history of culture in San Antonio.
Its design borrows from elements of skyscrapers, Spanish missions, and a revival movement. The Majestic Theatre’s auditorium is a practice in excess. Masked figures are carved into woodwork along the mezzanine, the dome is painted a dark hue of blue and has light bulbs shining in the replicated night sky (the bulbs are even in the same position as the stars the night the venue opened), and at one time stuffed birds were perched on the fence along the balcony. The theater even featured replicas of famous Greek, Roman, and Renaissance sculptures.
Apart from the excessive decorative features inside and outside the building (the theater has a 76-foot high sign with a peacock perched on top),the Majestic Theatre made history in Texas by being the first to be completely air-conditioned, a wide move considering the summer heat in central Texas.
The Majestic Theatre began as a movie house and had great success offering a distraction to the often-troubled or changing world in the 20th century. Now the theatre is used far more as a venue for live performances. Most often these are performances by musicians, but once in a while a touring Broadway show like Wicked the Musical will honor bring thousands to every scheduled performance.
